Merry Christmas!
We just wanted to take the time to introduce you to the website, in case you're unfamiliar with totally non-life-altering uses of technology. What you've stumbled upon here is an infinitesimal portion of the fast, blubbering expanse that is the World Wide Web, which we've co-opted and devoted entirely to pictures of professional basketball players wearing hats of the kind worn by Santa Claus (according to legend). Welcome to NBA Santas, where -- thanks to the commodification of a religious holiday and the underlying absurdities of pro sports in America -- every day is Christmas day.
We started this website because we noticed there are a ton of photos out there of NBA players wearing Santa hats (full origin story in the picture, below).
What began with us posting a photo or two each day with headlines that are either terrible Christmas-basketball puns or headlines that are semi-related to current events in the NBA, has grown into... well, nothing, really; that's still what this is. But look how many pictures there are! We hope you'll appreciate our appreciation of this preposterous phenomenon, because that would be all kinds of validating.
Of course you have questions. Why are there so many photos of NBA players dressed in Santa hats? Why have the "authors" of this blog devoted countless hours of their otherwise busy lives to tracking these photos down? And isn't David Stern Jewish? (Is Gary Payton?).
We suspect the number of photos has something to do with the NBA's ongoing attempt to reinvent its image in the post-Jordan era. But the truth is there is no satisfying explanation for this phenomenon. Like the Isaiah-era Knicks, NBA Santas raises more questions than it can answer.
In spite of this confusion, or perhaps because of it, we soldier on. If you're new to the site, you're glad you're here - and so are we. Here's a refresher course on what we're all about:
There's more to come from NBA Santas - much more. We've begun rolling out some running commentaries and random thoughts on all the basketball we're been watching -- because sometimes, not even millionaires in Santa hats is more absurd than the fourth quarter of Wizards-Kings. After that, who knows what the future will leave under our tree. Merchandise? Video content? None of the above? Only Santa knows, and he's not telling.
But we can promise this. NBA Santas will continue striving to fill the stat sheet for our fans -- even if it means intentionally missing a layup on the other team’s basket so we get that last rebound we need for a triple double.
